My Asobi Asobase first impression wasn’t what I expected from the series. In my review I’ll talk about the things that the series did and what I expected from it.
Asobi Asobase First Impression Review
Asobi Asobase isn’t what I thought the series was going to be like. I expected it to stick to a story for the episode and not be a series of random stories to make up each episode. I’m not really a fan of series like this, in fact I think the only anime series like this I liked was School Rumble. Which to be honest told a story and had random stories to fill a full episode but stuck with the overall story which this series doesn’t do.
Asobi Asobase normally tells 4 stories that don’t even relate in any way. I’m not going to review the few minute stories that make up an episode but I will say that this type of episode does get annoying because the first episode of Nomura wanting Olivia to teach her English was better than the other short stories in the episode. I thought that it would at least be the full episode which it could have easily been.. The reason for my feeling on why it would have been a better episode will be talked more about in the character section for Olivia.
The episode might have things that connect such as the club the cast of characters created. The reason for the club really escapes me I know Nomura wanted to make a club so Olivia would teach her English and Hanako joined to try to become popular. Which is why she joined the light tennis club before she quit. I do hope the series will try to be funny without having to resort to low brow ecchi jokes, which really don’t fit the series. I think it was a way to try to be funny or be more popular as most series have ecchi jokes for no real reason. This is another reason why I hate series like this of just short stories making an episode. The mini stories being an episode wouldn’t be bad if it was a mini story of a few minutes per episode which this series should actually be if you ask me.
For the characters the cast is really weak since we only get three characters which I wish was a lot more like a school life anime series. Also with the story really being a collection of stories the series doesn’t really help up get to know the characters really.
Nomura Kasumi is a character who is bad at English and to improve her English she tries to get Olivia to teach her English. She really seems to have a mean streak which we see her after she wins a match of rock-paper-scissors.
Hanako is really a character that doesn’t have any real impact on the stories. She seems to just be a character that is just going to be that character that has very little impact on a story. I do hope she does have an impact in the stories at least the same impact as the other characters.
Olivia is another main character who we are lead to believe she is from America, which would explain her name. We later find out her backstory isn’t true about her. I will say that she will play a bigger role in the story and perhaps her backstory will come out in a future episode.
The animation is good but I do wish the animation had better colors such as deep and more rich colors and not seem washed out and light. But I can see the animation style could grow on me as the series goes on but for the first episode it’s going ot be hard to really jump in the series and be a fan of the style. This is really always a hard thing to do when I jump from other series that have better animation style then jump to one like this.
The voice acting I’m not really a fan of the voice acting is good but I would like to get more than the few voices that we have. I know that the series won’t live up to other school life series with has a full cast to give the series more of a real school life feel. I know I mentioned it before but it’s what was great about the voice acting of School Rumble. We got a large class and to add more roles they threw in characters from another class in with the main class of characters. I do hope the series does find a way to give us more characters to add to the good voice acting.
The sound was good the episode had a lot of backing music in the background. The amount of music in the episode really showed the budget of the series which I can image will be throughout the series. The background music didn’t really add to the scene such as having any impact on the actual scene such as enhancing the scenes with touching music as it seemed to not really mesh with the scene. Such as early in the episode with it playing fast rock music in the game of rock-paper-scissors.
The ED song was really odd and didn’t really fit the overall feeling of the episode. It was a metal song which reminded me of the pop/metal group BABYMETAL with the pop part sung by a female and death metal like vocals sung by a guy. Really I think they should have got a song from Pikarin to be the ED song which I feel would be better if they were going to use that genre to close out the episode.
